Mountain Leader Assessment Refresher Day

Mountain Leader Assessment Refresher Day

So what does the day look like

Morning

We will head out from Ogwen up into the hills and work on some Navigation Skills in a similar environment that you will face in the Assessment looking at contours, ground and features.  I will put you in a position of leading a group whilst also sharpening up those navigation skills on some paths and some off path ground to practise more complex micro navigation.

This part of the day will last the whole morning and will take us right through to dinner time

Dinner Time

We will stop for around 40mins or so with refreshments available at the Ogwen Café or you are welcome to bring your own lunch.

Afternoon

In the afternoon we will once again head off out into the hills this time with the very first section being about some more navigation but then we will put the maps away and spend some time looking at moving on steep ground, supporting weaker hikers on steep ground and practising those skills you’ll be assessed on in your assessment.

The final section of the day will be looking at Kit, Rope handling and Rope Safety practising how to use ropes safely in pairs descending on steep ground looking specifically at the kinds of things you’ll be expected to do on your assessment.

De Brief

Finally we will be back once again at the Ogwen Café and we can have a brief chat about the day and just go through things we have covered and you can ask me anything you want about the ML Award and anything else you are thinking about in terms of preparation for your Assessment

Kit Required

Full Mountain Kit to be carried, full water proofs, hat, gloves, food and drink and a good quality head torch is a necessity.

For this event Helmets will be needed, plus a 30m rope these can be hired form me and if you need this then please let me know in advance.

FAQ - Event Info

Parking

Parking is available at the start point here, there are payable fees, likely not be a problem to get a space at this time in the morning even in summer.

 Toilets

There are public toilets at the Starting Point

Refreshments

We will be at the Ogwen café for dinner middle of the day and maybe afterwards depending on the time we finish but we will have a chance to go to the café at dinner time.

There is also a shop a few miles either direction from the starting point

Fitness Level Required

The Event will not be fast at all, very social and steady hiking with lots of regrouping however we are summiting peaks around 1000m across some steep and uneven ground so a basic level of fitness is required, if you want to discuss this please feel free to drop me a line.

Can Dogs come along?

Whilst I totally get the joy of bringing the dogs along to the mountains, dog lover myself I need everyone to be totally focused on the event and I don’t want to be responsible for anything that may happen to someone’s beloved pet.

Feel free to contact me for bespoke guided days out where dogs would be welcome

Can I bring my Kids

All my guided hikes are currently for 18+ only sorry unless on a bespoke guided day where this option may be available.
